A work light for small jobs at home is a portable fixture that throws a broad, bright pool of light onto the surface being worked on, and it is chosen for reach and glare control rather than for looks. Color temperature is the first variable. Warm white, roughly 2700K, suits bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms, and it is the safer default for walls painted in warm tones. Color rendering is the second variable, and it is the one most often ignored. A bulb with a high CRI shows the paint color as it was mixed. A bulb with a low CRI shifts certain pigments, especially reds and deep greens, and can make a carefully chosen wall color look muddy. For a repainted room, a CRI of 90 or above is worth the small extra cost.

Brightness is the third variable, and it is measured in lumens, not watts. A repainted room does not need more light than it did before, but a fresh coat of paint often makes the same bulb feel dimmer because the walls are no longer absorbing as much. How do you light a room while the paint is still drying?

During the job, the room's own fixture is usually taped off, removed, or unsafe to use. The work light carries the load. Two rules keep that period manageable.

First, aim the work light at the wall being painted, not at the painter. Light bouncing off the wet surface shows lap marks and thin spots that a light aimed from behind the shoulder will hide until the paint dries.

Second, keep the work light far enough back that it does not heat the fresh paint. A hot fixture close to a wall can soften or skin the surface, and the mark shows up after everything else looks finished. A light on a stand, two or three feet back and angled across the wall, avoids that.

When the paint is dry and the fixture goes back up, the work light has done its job. The bulb that replaces it is the one the room will live with, and it deserves the same attention the paint color got.

The final check is behavioral rather than technical. Turn the new bulb on in the evening, sit in the room, and look at the wall rather than at the bulb. If the color looks flat, the CRI is probably low. If it looks cold or clinical, the color temperature is probably too high. If it looks dimmer than expected, the lumen output is probably below what the old bulb delivered.

A repainted room is a good moment to replace old bulbs anyway, because the fixture is already down and the wall is already clear. Buying two or three candidate bulbs, testing them in the actual fixture, and returning the ones that lose is a small expense that prevents a year of a room that never quite looks right.
