A night without mains power is a lighting problem before it is anything else. The rooms do not go dark all at once: the stairs, the kitchen counter and the way to the electrical panel each need a few lumens, and they need them from a source the fault cannot switch off. Emergency lighting is planned like any other layer of a scheme, by asking what each place has to do once the supply stops. Where should emergency lights be kept in a house that loses power?

Four places earn their own lamp. The head of the stairs gets the clearest one, because the risk in an outage is a fall rather than the dark itself. Each bedroom gets a small lamp within reach of the bed, so nobody has to cross a room to find light. The kitchen counter gets a lamp that can be stood up and aimed, since most of what happens during an outage happens there. The electrical panel gets a light that stays where it is put, because someone will eventually open that door with a torch held in the teeth and both hands busy.

Each lamp lives in its place rather than in a drawer, and each is checked on the same day every month. A lamp that has to be searched for is a lamp that will not be found. Rechargeable lamps are charged to full at the start of storm season, and any lamp with removable cells is stored with the cells beside it rather than inside it, where slow discharge and heat shorten their life.

Are candles or battery LED lamps the right choice in an outage?

Candles are the traditional answer and the wrong one for a room nobody is watching. An open flame on a table, in a house where the power is out, beside paper, curtains or a fallen tea towel, starts a share of outage fires that a battery lamp cannot start at all. A battery LED lamp runs cool, stands on its own base, survives being knocked over, and can be left on in a child's room after the adult has left it.

Candles keep one narrow role: an hour at a table with people awake and seated around them, with nothing flammable within reach. Everything else in the plan is better served by a lamp with a battery, and those batteries should be the same size as the ones in the household torches, so that one box refills everything and nobody is hunting for a different cell in the dark.

What a charged lamp has to do

A stair or a hallway needs roughly 150 to 300 lumens to be crossed safely, a bedside lamp needs far less, and a night path needs barely 20. Warm colour, near 2700 K, keeps the eye adapted after dark and makes a strange evening feel like an ordinary one. A low mode matters more than a high mode: most of an outage is spent sitting still, and a lamp that can be dimmed runs for a night instead of an hour.

A flat base and a head that tilts let one lamp do the work of two, and a hook or a magnet on the back earns its place above the panel and inside a cupboard. Runtime is read from the box in hours at the low setting rather than at the high one, and a spare charged power bank keeps a phone alive without borrowing the lamp's own battery.

Running the plan through one dark evening

The test is a single evening with the main breaker off, done on purpose and announced to the household. Everyone finds their own lamp without help, the stairs are crossed, a meal is finished, and the panel is opened with the light that is meant to be there. Notes go on the same list as the smoke alarm check: what ran flat, what was too bright, what could not be reached.

Anything that failed is a change to the plan rather than a reason to abandon it. The exercise ends with the mains back on, the lamps returned to their charging points, and one note added to the household calendar for the next monthly press of the test button.

Test the plan before the storm arrives

Emergency lighting is cheap to get right and expensive to improvise. One charged lamp per floor, one per bedroom, and one that stays with the panel cover almost everything an outage asks of a house. A lamp that has to be found in the dark is not emergency lighting.

Common mistakes

  • Keeping one torch in a kitchen drawer and calling it a plan for four people.
  • Leaving rechargeable lamps on a shelf for a year, then finding them flat in the first hour.
  • Burning candles through the evening because they were already in the house.
  • Placing a bright lamp beside the bed and losing the night vision that makes a crossing at three in the morning safe.
